About the Author

Robert Bayley is a writer, composer and artist. For most of his adult life he has lived with paranoid schizophrenia. This has resulted in long periods of hospitalisation as the illness has ravaged his life. The persecutory voices and visions bombard his every day existence, causing him to descend into the hell of paranoiac despair. A myriad of medicinal treatments have been tried to keep the symptoms under some form of control, with the archaic major tranquillizers bringing horrendous side effects, to the current use of atypical neuroleptics. These work with greater precision, and so contribute some relief. This allows the author to capitalise on periods of positive and intense creativity. He has studied the visual arts, incorporating film, photography, ceramics and art history. He is a multi-instrumentalist, and composes and records music combined with spoken prose that conveys the horror of psychotic bombardment.

His creative endeavours are a method of coping with disorder and extremes, and his work, in whatever genre, attempts to articulate this. To tap into, and extract the profound nature of suffering, is what motivates Robert. His desire is to describe and transform that torment into constructive and inspiring realms. The words, chords and imagery are his tools.

I had never seen television before I was 17 years old. I was raised on books. I have read hundreds of them. When I started reading this one the author immediately astounded me with his great knowledge about an academic subject. How could this be possible. The author is the patient. How could he write in such a learned, eloquent, articulate, fluent, poetic vocabulary as if he is the doctor. And throughout the book I found his style interesting and a conversational style of writing or speaking, like a private conversation, expressing feelings or opinions with great force and clarity. He makes makes his meaning very clear but in a Shakespearean Style. His ability to share, what by definition of his illness should not be possible to share, is indeed a great achievement. It feels like Einstein is explaining the nature of the illness. His style is outrageously entertaining for dealing with this subject, and also very articulate, like the description of a great artists paintings. His many well turned phrases are like a kaleidoscope of colors, thoughts and feelings that convince you that you really understand what it is all about, even though your intelligence tells you it would take 16 years of medical training before you could possibly know what you think you have just been taught. Robert has proven categorically that mental illness is absolutely no bar to creative expression. It was truly mesmerizing reading. If you are an author and have ever said, I wish I had said that that way, this book will become a treasure for anyone who occasionally cannot resist plagiarism.Here is an example: " The air was dry and the heatwave biting. The evergreens stood proud, resisting the scorching temperature. The youngest were left under tranquil shelter of the weeping willows. Innocence encompassed those present, the sky streaked by an impressionists variegated palette, balloons ascending. An Idyllic day to share and remember." Enough said. What films this man could direct!
